Tags

View, organize, create, and import the tags in a project.

Tags are the data points collected from your equipment, and a project’s Tags view is where you manage them. Here you can browse every tag in the building, see its current value, and — with the right permissions — create, edit, organize, and import tags.

Browsing and organizing

Tags are shown in a list and can be arranged into folders to keep large projects manageable. You can move tags between folders, and search to find a specific one — the search box takes wildcards and path fragments, which is what makes a project with thousands of tags workable. See Finding things.

A tag’s Description column is hidden by default; turn it on under Preferences if you rely on descriptions to tell tags apart.

A folder can be deleted from inside it, from the folder’s own More menu — useful when you’ve drilled into a folder and don’t want to navigate back out to its parent to remove it. Deleting a folder removes everything in it.

By default tags are shown by their system name. You can give a tag a more readable custom name and choose, in your preferences, whether to show system names, custom names, or both.

Kinds of tags

Whatever its kind, every tag shares the same settings for values, formatting, limits, transformation, and history.

Creating a tag

When creating a tag you choose its type, give it a name, and provide the details for where its value comes from — for a device tag, that’s the device and its protocol-specific settings; for a calculated tag, the script or source tags it’s based on. You can also configure formatting, limits, history, and whether the tag is writable.

Importing tags

Rather than creating tags one by one, you can import tags (and devices) in bulk from a file. During import you choose how to handle conflicts with existing items, so you stay in control of what’s created, updated, or left alone. See Import and export.

Tag values in bulk

Separately from a tag’s configuration, you can export the values tags held at a chosen moment, and write values back to many tags at once from a CSV. See Export and update tag values.
