Getting started
What THMI is, how the Cloud and Edge applications fit together, and where to go next.
THMI helps you monitor and manage your buildings — bringing the data from your equipment together in one place so you can see what’s happening, get alerted when something needs attention, and act on it.
This section introduces the ideas that appear throughout the rest of the documentation. Once you’re comfortable with them, branch into the application you’re using.
Two applications
THMI is made up of two applications that work together:
- Cloud — the central, web-based application. It gathers data from every building you manage and is where you do most of your work: organizing projects, configuring what’s collected, building screens, and managing alarms, trends, and users.
- Edge — an application that runs locally inside a building, close to the equipment. It collects data on site and sends it up to the Cloud.
Data always flows from Edge to Cloud: the Edge application reads your on-site devices, and the Cloud brings that data together across all your buildings. Because of this, the two applications don’t do the same things — you’ll do most configuration in the Cloud, while Edge focuses on viewing what’s happening on site. See How data flows for the full picture.
Which one are you using?
- If you work across multiple buildings, or you’re setting up projects, tags, alarms, or users, you’re almost certainly in the Cloud application.
- If you’re on site and mainly need to see what’s happening in your building, you’re likely using the Edge application.
You can switch between the Cloud and Edge sections of this documentation at any time using the menu at the top of the sidebar.
Core ideas
A few concepts come up everywhere in THMI. They’re worth understanding before you dive in:
- Projects — each building or site you manage.
- Tags — the individual data points collected from your equipment.
- Alarms — how THMI alerts you when something needs attention.
- How data flows — how data travels from your building to the Cloud.
- Roles and access — what you’re allowed to see and do.
Signing in
You’ll use the Cloud application from your web browser. Accounts are created by invitation — when someone invites you, you’ll receive an email to set up your account, after which you can sign in with your email and password. Some organizations also require a second step at sign-in, such as a code from an authenticator app or a security key.
If you’ve forgotten your password, use the Forgot password? link on the sign-in screen to receive a secure reset link by email.
