How data flows

How data travels from the equipment in your building up to the Cloud.

Understanding how data moves through THMI explains why some things happen in the Edge application and others in the Cloud — and why the two don’t offer exactly the same features.

From your building to the Cloud

  1. Devices in your building — controllers, meters, and sensors — produce data.
  2. The Edge application, running on site, reads those devices and turns each value into a tag.
  3. That data is sent up to the Cloud, which brings together the information from every building you manage.

Data flows in one direction for monitoring: Edge → Cloud. The Cloud is the hub where everything comes together, which is why it’s where you organize projects, configure what’s collected, and manage alarms, trends, and users across all your sites.

Buildings, the Edge system, and projects

The on-site Edge system that collects a building’s data is connected to a project in the Cloud. The live values you see in a project are the data that system is reading right now.

A single on-site system can feed more than one project — for example when different parts of a building are managed separately — so the same source data can appear in each of the relevant projects.

Why this matters

Because data originates on site but is brought together centrally:

  • The Cloud is the heavyweight: it’s where most features live and where you do configuration and management.
  • Edge is focused on the building in front of you — primarily viewing what’s happening, with a limited set of on-site actions.
